The verdict is in and the results are superb for the 1,759 seat performance hall at the Tobin Center of Performing Arts in San Antonio. Since its opening in September 2014, the Tobin has already hosted such notables such as Sir Paul McCartney.
In a city that features a variety of unique venues, what is especially exciting are the extremely high marks the Tobin Center is receiving from symphony, opera and music experts from around the globe. Some have suggested Tobin could be the finest venue in America, if not the within the top five. “Acoustically superior,” “Perfect balance of clarity and spaciousness,” and “a splendid auditorium with outstanding ratings in every category” are just some of the reviews offered.
Liken the Tobin Center’s H-E-B Performance Hall to a golf course and this is the Pebble Beach, Pine Valley, or Augusta National. Just as Arnold Palmer is known for golf course design, the king of acoustical consulting is the Akustiks firm, who is responsible for the excellence at Tobin.
The Tobin Center is actually three venues in one. H-E-B Performance Hall and Carlos Alvarez Studio Theater are the performance sites within the Tobin. With distinct lobbies, the two spaces are set within, and extended beyond the walls of the former Municipal Auditorium, originally opened in 1926.
H-E-B Performance Hall
The H-E-B is a visually spectacular hall which is home to the BMW of San Antonio Signature Series performances such as Jekyl and Hyde, Cirque Dreams, and Buddy-The Buddy Holly Story. The hall also hosts Ballet San Antonio, San Antonio Symphony, Opera San Antonio, Chamber Orchestra of San Antonio, The Children’s Chorus of San Antonio, Children’s Fine Arts Series and more.
The H-E-B Performance Hall can be reconfigured for banquets ranging from 350 to 720 guests because of the first-in-nation electronic convertible floor, which can add or remove a dance floor if required. The orchestra shell can be moved and stored away with special lighting and curtains to augment the venue. Cabaret seating expands the size capacity to 2,100. The hall is 8,250 square feet.
Carlos Alvarez Studio
The 3,380 square foot Carlos Alvarez Theater is flexible enough to seat 250 for more intimate performances, workshops and receptions. The range of configurations include a variety of seating arrangements including auditorium-style, in-the-round performances, and dinner or cocktail tables.
River Walk Plaza
The Tobin uses this 6,300 square foot plaza, along the beautiful San Antonio River for a variety of functions. During overflow performances, guest can watch the interior performances from a 30-foot video wall augmenting the vibrant exterior. Patrons have access to the River Walk and River Taxi stop. Over 600 seat venues are accommodated on the Plaza.
