6 techniques to prevent mosquitoes from invading your home:

spray mosquitoes

Three ingredients for yard mosquito repellent. (NL)

Technique #1

Mosquito Yard Spray

Large bottle of inexpensive blue mouthwash.

Three (3) cups of Epsom Salt.

Three (3) stale 12 oz. cheap beer.

Mix the three ingredients together until the salt is dissolved.

Spray anywhere you sit or congregate outside: around pools, spas, lawn chairs, swing sets, etc.

It will not harm plants or flowers.

Mosquitoes should be gone from that area for at least two months. Best practice includes spraying around decks and sitting areas twice each summer.

Homemade Mosquito Repellant #2

Combine in a 16 oz. spray bottle:

15 drops of lavender oil.

3-4 tablespoons of vanilla extract

¼ cup of lemon juice

Fill bottle with water. Shake. Spray.

Technique #3

Dryer sheets are a good repellent. (HEB)

Repel Mosquitoes With Dryer Sheets

Simply hang a dryer sheet outside where you are. Campers, hikers and gardeners place them in their pants pockets (with some exposed). The smell will repel the mosquitoes. It is pretty powerful so you do not have to hang them everywhere.

Technique #4

Grow Catnip

Catnip, also known as Nepeta cateria, is known to release an odor that drives cats crazy for it. The odor also repels pesky mosquitos—up to ten times more effective than DEET!

Technique #5

When Grilling

Mosquitos always seem to show up during a barbecue. By adding rosemary, you’ll not only ward them off but add delicious flavor to your food. Rosemary also works on campfires.

Technique #6

Grow flowers and herbs

  • Basil is great for pesto, but mosquitos hate it.
  • Marigolds repel mosquitoes as well as aphids and even rabbits.
  • Lavender might be a favorite for relaxation but mosquitos detest it.
  • Lemongrass has natural citronella oil in it which repels mosquitos.

Advice from the CDC

Protect your baby or child

  • Dress your child in clothing that covers arms and legs.
  • Cover crib, stroller, and baby carrier with mosquito netting.

Wear long-sleeved shirts and long pants

  • Treat items, such as boots, pants, socks, and tents, with permethrin* or buy permethrin-treated clothing and gear.
    • Permethrin-treated clothing will protect you after multiple washings. See product information to find out how long the protection will last.
    • If treating items yourself, follow the product instructions.
    • Do not use permethrin products directly on skin.

*In some places, such as Puerto Rico, where permethrin products have been used for years in mosquito control efforts, mosquitoes have become resistant to it. In areas with high levels of resistance, use of permethrin is not likely to be effective.

Take steps to control mosquitoes inside and outside your home

  • Use screens on windows and doors. Repair holes in screens to keep mosquitoes outside.
  • Use air conditioning when available.
    • Sleep under a mosquito bed net if air conditioned or screened rooms are not available or if sleeping outdoors.
  • Once a week, empty and scrub, turn over, cover, or throw out items that hold water, such as tires, buckets, planters, toys, pools, birdbaths, flowerpots, or trash containers. Check inside and outside your home. Mosquitoes lay eggs near water.
